HLN Co-sponsors HIMSS24 Public Health Data Modernization Workshop
As a precursor to the HIMSS24 Global Conference, HIMSS staff convened a public health pre-conference workshop that brought together over 140 representatives from state and local public health agencies, as well as government attendees, EHR vendors, and partners from ONC, CDC, ASTHO, CSTE, AIRA and other organizations including, Regenstreif, Big Cities Health Coalition, Association for Immunization Managers, and APHL. With an emphasis on public health and spurring discussions focused on public health data modernization, attendees deliberated on where and how public health aligns with TEFCA and policy. As a kickoff to HIMSS24, this workshop yielded inspirational discussions and messages, fostered new and strengthened existing partnerships, and elevated public health’s participation in emerging and impactful strategic initiatives.
A proud co-sponsor of the HIMSS24 Public Health Data Modernization Workshop, HLN Consulting provided opening remarks that highlighted its commitment to ensuring public health has a voice in crucial initiatives such as TEFCA and Data Modernization. Facilitating table discussions with intentionally diverse breakout groups around these efforts offered a broad spectrum of public health perspectives and recommendations for making public health a more integral, relevant, and active participant in these efforts. At the end of the session, HLN summarized the multitude of insights and ideas that were raised by the participants and reemphasized its commitment to promoting and supporting public health.
HLN will contribute to a summary report of the workshop and the breakout discussions that will be forthcoming from HIMSS. In the interim, the discussion and efforts related to TEFCA and public health data modernization will continue.
HLN – Out and about at HIMSS24
Authored By: Aasa Dahlberg Schmit
HIMSS24 offered many opportunities for discussions and public/private collaboration related to public health from the pre-conference Public Health Workshop and Native American Health IT Symposium, and various sessions presented by ONC, CDC, and public health agencies. The AIRA networking event, the Government Connections Plaza, and the public health use cases demonstrated as part of the Interoperability Showcase highlighted public health aspirations, successes, and trends within a very challenging environment.
Throughout the conference, TEFCA was a major topic in many sessions and discussions, with questions about how well it is understood by the public health community, how quickly it could be adopted, and how it might benefit public health.
As usual, the networking events and the exhibit hall were a bit overwhelming, though a good way to combine some fun with work. We especially appreciated the many places to get a good cup of coffee, ice cream, frozen yogurt, the pi-day celebration, and the puppies.
See Us on HIMSS TV!
It was also an honor to participate on HIMSS TV where we discussed the DMI initiative and the impact DMI has on public health.
We look forward to even more public health discussions and participation at HIMSS in 2025!
