HIMSS25 revamped its Interoperability Showcase to promote individual or group demonstrations of healthcare initiatives within the newly named Interop+SMART Experience Pavilion. HLN took the opportunity to present our efforts over the past several years with FHIR as it applies to Immunization Information Systems (IIS). With several IIS-
FHIR use cases, we demonstrated how FHIR makes new types of modern interoperability and software reuse possible that have never been seen before in IIS, including Bulk FHIR for querying by outside organizations. The use cases reflected ways in which FHIR can benefit IIS and its data exchange partners, including more accessible and efficient interfaces with more potential for software reuse. HLN also presented methods to achieve these benefits by retrofitting an IIS with a FHIR server, highlighting the FHIR Facade and Native FHIR architecture models as examples.
HLN also presented its award-winning, open-source Immunization Calculation Engine (ICE) in the Interoperability Pavilion – an application that provides immunization data to healthcare providers, public health agencies, schools, and health plans for clinical decision support. ICE turns complex immunization histories into clear, actionable insights, ensuring patients get the right vaccines at the right times. Whether working with individual patients or supporting large-scale population health or public health initiatives, ICE is a flexible, scalable open source solution that integrates seamlessly with any health IT system quickly and reliably to help protect communities from preventable diseases.
